1. way + 定語從句
例1：
① I don’t like the way in which you speak to her.
�、凇 don’t like the way that you speak to her.
�、邸 don’t like the way you speak to her.
解析：在句1中，which代指先行詞the way，定語從句的邏輯語序為you speak to her in which，意為“你用那種方式和她說話”。因which代指the way，故用in和which搭配。分析從句的成分可知，in which在從句中為方式狀語。
根據定語從句的句法規則，in which引導定語從句作方式狀語時，in which也可使用that代替，或者省略引導詞，也就是句2和句3的表達方式都是正確的。需要注意的是，句2中的that并非前文所說的代詞性的that代指先行詞的常規用法，而是副詞作方式狀語，相當于in which。
句2與句3正確的前提是引導詞在從中作狀語，并非the way后的定語從句都是如此。如：
例2：You speak to her in the way _______ I don’t like.
解析：先行詞為the way，_______ I don’t like為定語從句，其邏輯語序應為I don’t like ____，引導詞應代指先行詞在從句中作賓語，故用that或which都可以。又因為引導詞是從句的賓語，因此也可省略，即下面的三種表達方式都是正確的：
① You speak to her in the way which I don’t like.
�、凇ou speak to her in the way that I don’t like.
�、邸ou speak to her in the way I don’t like.
請注意以下兩點：
1. 句3中的省略的是that或which，因為引導詞作從句的賓語，而例1中句3省略的是in which或that，引導詞是從句的方式狀語。區別這兩種情況首先應判斷引導詞是從句的賓語還是原因狀語，然后再判斷用什么引導詞或是否可以省略。
2. 同樣是the way做先行詞，但是定語從句的引導詞不同，可見引導詞并非由先行詞決定，從上面的解題過程可以看出，決定用什么引導詞要看引導詞在從句中是何成分，句子成分影響引導詞的詞性，當然也影響著引導詞的選擇。
例：
What surprised me was not what he said but _____he said it. (湖北卷)
A. the way B. in the way that C. in the way D. the way which
解析：答案為A項。句意為“令我吃驚的不是他說的話，而是他說話的方式”。根據句意可知the way前不用in，可排除B項和C項。the way是先行詞，he said it為定語從句，邏輯語序為he said it ______，引導詞為從句的方式狀語，可用in which、that或省略。D項的錯誤在于把引導詞誤用為從句的賓語。

(1) way + in which + 定語從句
例如：
She was pleased with the way in which he had accepted her criticism.
(2) way + that +定語從句
例如：
They didn’t do it in the way that we do now.
(3) way + 定語從句

特別提醒：若way在從句中充當賓語或主語時，可以用which引導定語從句。

詞 that (常可省略) 或 in which引導。 （通常省略 that，the way 直接接從句） 。
