　　1. What is it that Joe can’t find in the bathroom？

　　本句使用了強調句型 It is/was+被強調成分+that+其他成分，它常用來強調句子中除謂語動詞外的各種成分。

　　若被強調的部分是人，that可以被who替代； 如果把is/was置于句首，則構成強調句的一般疑問句； 如果對被強調的部分進行提問，則構成了強調句的特殊疑問句，本句就屬于這種結構。如：

　　It was an old magazine that Mary found in the bag.

　　Was it an old magazine that Mary found in the bag？

　　What was it that Mary found in the bag？

　　2. However，the number of people who learn English as a foreign language is more than 750 million. （Reading）

　　There are a great many American Indian words，for example to howl means to cry。（Integrating Skills）

　　the number of……表示……的數量，a great/good many相當于many或a large/great number of，表示許多的，大量的，其后跟可數名詞的復數形式，不可跟不可數名詞。如：

　　The number of trees on the deserted mount is over 200，000.

　　在那片荒山上種植的樹木數量已超過二十萬棵。

　　A great many（A number of） visitors come to the Palace Museum every year.

　　每年有大量的游客來故宮參觀。

　　3. At the same time，British English and American English started borrowing words from other languages，ending up with different words.

　　句子中ending up with different words為？鄄ing形式短語，在句子中作結果狀語。？鄄ing形式在句子中可以用作狀語，說明時間、方式、伴隨狀態、原因、條件、結果等。如：

　　Hearing the baby’s cry，Mary rushed into the room.（時間狀語）

　　聽到嬰兒的哭聲，瑪麗飛快地跑進屋里。

　　Those children played in the garden，singing and dancing.（伴隨狀語）

　　那些孩子在花園里玩耍著，一邊唱歌，一邊跳舞。

　　The man took an axe with him into the woods，cutting down many trees.（結果狀語）

　　那個人手里拿著一把斧子走進樹林里，砍倒了許多樹。
