英語名詞作定語與形容詞作定語的區(qū)別

1. 名詞作定語強(qiáng)調(diào)“類指”，而名詞所有格則表示“特指”。如：
Please don’t put the dog’s food under the table. 請不要把狗食放在桌子下面。
Dog food costs as much as meal. 狗的食品和人的食品一樣貴。
第一句中的dog’s food特指給某一條狗食用的，第二句中的dog food表類別，指供狗食用的食品，而并非只給某條狗食用。
2. 名詞作定語表明實質(zhì)，形容詞作定語則起描述與限定作用。如：
silver coins 銀幣(silver表明本質(zhì)，即指用銀做的幣)
silvery hair 銀白的頭發(fā)(silvery起描繪作用，為描繪性形容詞)
a luxury hotel 豪華飯店(指官方為飯店定的級別很高，但讓人的感愛未必豪華)
a luxurious hotel 豪華的飯店(只是說其豪華，表明話者的感受，其級別未必很高)
3. 有時采用名詞作定語，可能是因為沒有相應(yīng)的派生形容詞，此時使直接用名詞作定語，或與之構(gòu)成合成詞。如：
school gate 校門(名詞school沒有相應(yīng)的形容詞)
tomato sauce番茄汁(名詞tomato沒有相應(yīng)的形容詞)
4. 有時在漢語看來似乎要用形容詞作定語，但英語習(xí)慣上卻要用名詞作定語。如：
science fiction 科幻小說 (不說 scientific fiction)
health situation 健康狀況(不說healthy situation)
convenience food 方便食品(不說convenient food)
