小時候我害怕狗。記得有一回在新年里，我到二伯父家去玩。在他那個花園內，一條大黑狗追趕我，跑過幾塊花圃。后來我上了洋樓，才躲過這一場災難，沒有讓狗嘴咬壞我的腿。以后見著狗，我總是逃，它也總是追，而且屢屢望著我的'影子狺狺狂吠。我愈怕，狗愈兇。怕狗成了我的一種病。我漸漸地長大起來。有一天不知道因為什么，我忽然覺得怕狗是很可恥的事情。看見狗我便站住，不再逃避。我站住，狗也就站住。它望著我狂吠，它張大嘴，它做出要撲過來的樣子。但是它并不朝著我前進一步。
Translation:
From then on, I always ran away once seeing a dog. It would always run after me andbark furiously at the sight of my shadow. And the more scared I was, the fiercer it became. I developed a canine phobia. As I was growing up, one day it suddenly dawned on me somehow that it was shameful to be afraid of a dog. Hence, instead of shying away in fear, I stood confronting it. I stood firm and so did it. It yapped with its mouth wide open as if it were about to pounce on me, while it never moved a single step towards me.

Translation:
Books are my beloved teachers. Poverty deprived me of my childhood happiness and school education, while books embraced me liberally and nurtured me generously. It is to them that I own what I am today. Without them, I would probably have ended up in abject miserylong ago. Books are my good friends, which have offered me a golden key to broadening my horizons and ridding myself of stupidity and ignorance. They spare no efforts to help me. Books are my sweetheartd in my youth, my bosom friends in my middle age, and my companions in my declining years. They make me never feel lonely, nor fear social snobbery or fickleness of the world. It is no more than them that have made me rich in the inner world.
