In the original Chicken Soup for the Soul, Jack Canfield tells the story of Monty, who was the son of a poor horse trainer. During his senior year he was 36 a writing project to describe what he wanted to be when he grew up. His seven-page essay 37 the 200-acre ranch (牧場) he wanted to own. It 38 a diagram of the ranch and a detailed floor 39 of his 4,000-square-foot home.
40 the passion and effort Monty put into his paper, he received it back with a large “F” 41 on it and a note to see the teacher after class. The teacher told Monty that the 42
he had given him that grade, was because his paper was 43 . He went on to cite all of the reasons and told Monty that if he would rewrite the paper, with a more realistic goal, he would reconsider the grade.
After 44 it for a week, the young man turned in the same paper with no changes, along with the 45 , “You can keep the ‘F’ and I’ll keep my 46 .”
The 47 of the true story has the teacher bringing 30 students for a summer campout, at the 200-acre ranch of the now grown and 48 Monty, who lives in his 4,000-square-foot dream home.
If it worked for the son of a poor horse trainer, it will work for you. The 49 is simple:
First, create a dream that is so big that it will keep you excited. Second, 50 the dream in minute detail. Third, live in the dream so that it becomes 51 to you on the inside. Finally, hold on to it so 52 that no one can take it away.
Jack Canfield goes on to offer this great wisdom:“Cherish your visions; cherish your ideals. For out of them will 53 all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment; of these, if you
54 true to them, your world will at last be built.”
But Monty, perhaps, offered the greatest wisdom:“You can keep the ‘F’ and I’ll keep my dream.” And that’s worth 55 about.

Feeling exhausted and hopeless, I began walking to my car. Every step seemed tiring, and every step was another to survive. As I looked up into the sky I thought about how my grandmother had left me, and my anger began to return. I was annoyed by the loss, and my belief in God was beginning to fade. I couldn’t understand why these things happened. So as I stood in a public parking lot a million questions formed in my mind. Why did this happen to me? Aren’t we supposed to get signs from the people that pass on? Why did I not feel her presence anymore? Is there a heaven?
Suddenly, a woman driving right by my side rolled down her window and distracted my unanswered thoughts. “Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me,” she said loudly. Thinking she was going to ask for my parking spot, I simply pointed to my car. The thought of having to say where my car was seemed like too much to bear. “No, excuse me,” she said again.
At this point, I felt I had no choice but to see what this annoying lady wanted. As I got closer, I was startled—was this my grandmother’s nurse, Adu, who lived with her during her final months? I soon realized that she wasn’t, although the resemblance was unusual. Then, I realized that this Adu was searching for something in her bag. Surprisingly, I was overcome by a sense of relief that led me to be patient the entire time the lady was searching. Others would be nervous by a stranger reaching in their bag, but I wasn’t. She finally reached to the very bottom of her bag and handed me a three-page booklet. “It looks like you need this,” she said calmly with a warm smile on her face.
I looked down at the mysterious and obviously used booklet and on the front cover in big bold letters read “What Hope for Dead Loved Ones?”
It took me only a few seconds to comprehend the exchange with this woman, but by the time I looked up, she was gone.
I walked slowly into my car holding tightly the tiny little book that was given to me with fear that it would fly away in the wind. I didn’t know what it was exactly, but I knew that if my grandmother had anything to do with that I didn’t want to let it go.
I felt a sense of relaxation as I opened the first page. It explained how people pass on, but their spirit remains with us. This was the first time since my grandma had passed that I felt her with me, just like I had wanted. I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, but I did know that I finally felt happiness from the surprising change in events.
I couldn’t, and still can’t, believe what had happened to me on that day. I don’t remember the specific details that you usually hear about like what the person was wearing, the time of day, or even the weather, but it doesn’t matter. It was a random day in November when my life turned back around and I began to feel hope again. It was real. It was a miracle. And, I’ll remember it for the rest of my life.
59. The author refused to say anything to the woman but just pointed to her own car at first mainly because ______.

Is carrying a few extra pounds into your senior years healthy? Advice has been mixed. Now, two studies published this month attempt to better define the ideal weight for fitness and longevity for adults over age 60.
The main point is that you don’t need to worry about being slightly overweight, as long as that extra weight is maintained at a consistent level. However, being very overweight isdetrimental to health, and exercising to lose body fat and to gain muscle mass is always beneficial.
Determining the ideal weight for older people has been a pursuit, with researchers looking for what weight is not too thin, but not too fat. Studies have suggested that being slightly overweight can be protective.
For example, a 2001 study by researchers at Yale University found that moderately overweight senior adults with a body mass index (BMI) of 27 — two points higher than the BMI of 25 that defines being overweight — lived longer than seniors who were either thinner or heavier. There’s a fine line here, though, because carrying extra pounds is a risk factor for many types of cancer and other diseases. And, according to the researchers behind the two new studies, the general public has misinterpreted the Yale findings to mean that being very overweight is healthy.
One new study, published this month in the American Journal of Epidemiology by researchers at The Ohio State University in Columbus, found that seniors who maintained a stable, slightly overweight status were most likely to survive over the 16 years surveyed. Those seniors who had a so-called healthy weight going into the study (a BMI between 18.5 and 25) and who gained weight, but stayed below BMI 25, were slightly less likely to survive over the study period.
People in the obese group, with a BMI higher than 35 and who continued to gain weight, faced the worst among all the groups in the study. But next-to-last were normal-weight people who lost weight, but this was likely because they became sick, the researchers said.
The second study, appearing this month in the journal Obesity, was conducted by researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., and supports intentional weight loss among senior adults. Whether weight loss is beneficial has been debated because of this concept that being overweight is protective.
In short, the researchers found that physical activity and weight loss for overweight and obese adults resulted in lower cardiovascular (心血管) disease risk and improved mobility. This finding supports previous studies demonstrating that exercise builds muscle and bone strength, improves balance and coordination, prevents falls and enables seniors to enjoy a more active lifestyle, they said.
Hui Zheng of Ohio State, the lead author of first study, said that the negative effects of obesity on health are greatest for young people.
63. The underlined word “detrimental” in Paragraph 2 probably means ______.
A. important B. fundamental C. harmful D. helpful
64. As for the 2001 study, the general public wrongly think that _______.
A. it is healthy and protective for people to be very overweight
B. people with a BMI of 27 or more are classified as overweight
C. senior adults with a BMI of 27 lived longer than those either thinner or heavier
D. carrying extra pounds is a risk factor for many types of cancer and other diseases
65. What can we learn from the two new studies?
A. It’s difficult for seniors who had a so-called healthy weight to have a long life span.
B. It’s most dangerous for normal-weight people to continue to lose weight.
C. The two studies are based on and in agreement with previous studies.
D. The second one recommended overweight and obese adults to work out and lose weight.
66. What does the passage mainly tell us?
A. The negative effects of obesity on health are greatest for young people.
B. Being slightly overweight may be protective towards seniors.
C. It is harmless for young people being overweight to continue to gain weight.
D. People at a healthy weight should intentionally put on extra weight.

Jane arrives at Thornfield, having been met at the George Inn. Mrs. Fairfax confuses her a little at first, because she is so informal and welcoming. But in due course Jane discovers that Mrs. Fairfax is the housekeeper.
Jane’s pupil, Adele Varens, is the eight-year-old French child under the legal protection of Mr. Edward Rochester, the owner of the house. (We learn later that her mother had claimed she was his illegitimate daughter. Mr. Rochester is not convinced by this claim, but felt he could not leave the little girl poor when her mother died.)
Adele is a pleasant little girl, even if she is not a particularly eager student. Life goes on very peacefully for three months, until the return of Mr. Rochester. Jane first meets him on his horse, and her description of him is quite fanciful. He takes a fall and Jane helps him, although she does not know who he is until they are both back at Thornfield.
It is obvious to the reader, although not to Jane, that the reason why Mr. Rochester stays at Thornfield much longer than usual is that he finds her company enjoyable. Jane, unknowingly at first, falls in love with him. Their closeness is very apparent. There is something about Thornfield that is mysterious. Jane is encouraged to focus her attention on the servant Grace Poole, who is Mr. Rochester’s mad wife Bertha Mason’s keeper at Thornfield, and whose drunken carelessness frequently allows Bertha to escape and do something violent.
It is clear to the reader, though, that Mr. Rochester’s emotional engagement is immense. When his bed is set on fire, Jane rescues him, but does not understand why the matter is not pursued, despite Mr. Rochester assuring her the criminal is Grace. The next morning Grace behaves as though she has done nothing wrong.
Eventually, Mr. Rochester leaves, to go to a house party. He brings everyone at the party back with him, transforming the atmosphere in the house, and delighting Adele. One of the guests is Blanche Ingram, whom Mr. Rochester is confidently expected to marry. However, it is clear from the way she is portrayed in the book that she is too proud; our sympathies are not with her.
Mr. Rochester is called away from the house, and when he returns he chooses to play the role of a fortune teller. It is clear to the reader that one of his motives is to try to turn Blanche against the idea of marriage to him. While he has clearly bothered her, he is unsuccessful.
One afternoon, Jane hears that her cousin John Reed is dead and Mrs. Reed, who is probably on her deathbed, has been asking for her. With strict instructions from Mr. Rochester to return quickly, she sets off to Gateshead. On arrival, she realises she no longer hates her cousins. However, Mrs. Reed is still bitter towards her, owing to the fact that Jane’s mother was Mr Reed’s favourite sister and this resulted in him apparently favouring Jane over his own children.
A short time later, Mrs. Reed gives Jane a letter from her uncle, John Eyre, that was written three years earlier. It explains how he planned to adopt Jane and allow her to inherit his fortune. Mrs. Reed never handed the letter over because of her bitterness. Jane tries once more to seek reconciliation (和解), but without success; her aunt dies that night.
67. Who does the underlined word “she” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Jane. B. Mrs. Fairfax. C. Adele Varens. D. Grace Poole.
68. The story of Adele Varens mainly indicates that ______.
A. women have a low social status B. Mr. Rochester is sympathetic
C. Mr. Rochester is irresponsible D. girls are often abandoned by their parents
69. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Mr. Rochester expects that Blanche will marry him.
B. Mr. Rochester plays the role of a fortune teller to attract Jane.
C. Jane and Mr. Rochester enjoy each other’s company in Thornfield.
D. Grace Poole often gets drunk and does something violent.
70. Why is Mrs. Reed bitter towards Jane?
A. Because Jane inherited Mr. Reed’s fortune.
B. Because Jane doesn’t get along well with her cousins.
C. Because Jane’s mother was more beautiful than Mrs. Reed.
D. Because Mr. Reed loved Jane more than his own children.
第四部分 任務型閱讀(共10小題;每小題1分,滿分10分)

Disability aids are vital to those who suffer problems with executing work with two hands. These are people who have been disabled due to some major sickness or some other problems. In order to help them carry on their work in the normal way, disability aids are manufactured. This helps them making their life a lot easier than what it would have been without these aids. The kind of disability aids that an individual might require depends on the person only. It is the problem that a person faces that decides the aids that he/she will use for carrying out their respective jobs. The following is the list of a few disability aids that come of significant use.
The first and foremost aid is the stocking aid, aiding the individuals suffering from the problem of bending down to reach the foot and wear their own socks. These stocking aids have a gutter that is made up of plastic material. These gutters are shaped in a certain way along with the attachment of cotton tapes in it. The sock is then put over the gutter. The foot is placed inside the gutter. The cotton tapes help in pulling the socks up the leg and subsequently the sock. In this manner, the sock is worn by a person who has problem wearing it by bending one’s back and reaching the foot.
There are openers that help the people who have problem with their hands or wrists to open bottles of ketchup, jam and other such bottles and jars that necessitates the use of hands and fingers.
The third type of disability aids that comes to our minds are Lifts. Now what are lifts? Lifts are certain machines that help in lifting people from specific areas, such as a bathtub or a set of stairs. These lifts are of varied types and come for numerous applications. It is for the individual to decide the type that he/she requires to use.
For people, who have problems in balancing their upper bodies in a stable manner, there is something known as Grab rails. These grab rails are installed for those who have mobility problems in their upper bodies. These rails come in varieties of shapes, sizes and angles. These grab rails are available to home users as well, in their different variations. One can purchase and fix one to their homes according to one’s specificities. These grab rails require the act of screwing and drilling in order to fix them to their appropriate place. The prices of these rails also vary according to the variation of their shapes and sizes.
A portable book holder is a much sought after disability aid. It can be used by anybody for that matter, not just the disabled. These portable book holders are light weight and can be easily moved about. These holders relieve the strains on one’s hands, necks and shoulders that might occur due to the handling of a book. The holders are provided with extended legs that help in placing the reading material at suitable distance.
Thus with the help of these disability aids, the old and disabled people can make their lives much more convenient and comfortable that would otherwise have been a cumbersome and complex one.

Growing up is optional
Everyone will grow old but growing up is optional. We should grow up by always finding the opportunity in change.
Rose, a respectable granny, taught us by example that it is never too late to be all we can possibly be. At the age of 87, Rose finished the college degree she had begun years ago. One week after graduation she died peacefully in her sleep. Her story illustrates that people do not stop dreaming because they are old; they grow old because they stop dreaming. There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up. The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what they did, but rather for things they did not do.
From my point of view, there are many ways for us to keep growing.
