In the US and Britain, the slogan around colleges was “Save water. Shower with a friend.” Now, Wuhan University has come up with another system for the campus bathhouse. It charges students for the amount of time in a shower. Before entering the bathhouse, students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower with cash or their student ID card. The clock starts ticking the minute the tape is turned on. It pauses when a button is pressed for soap. An integrated circuit(IC)card reader at each tap shows the time. No money, no water. The benefits of the new system can be seen with the old system, which charged 1 yuan for each person regardless of time in the shower. The university used about 320 tons of water daily under the old system, but only 160 tons now.
Many students use the new system but opinions on it are divided. Some students say it is bad because bathing had become a sort of race. Many people using it for the first time are not sure how long they need to shower. Some might be embarrassed if their time is up and they’re still covered in soap. They have to ask the bathhouse worker to help them buy extra time.
“It’s a flaw in the system that you can not buy extra time on the ID card,” said Ren, a freshman in Wuhan University. The university is also considering some students’ suggestions that they be allowed to pay after they’ve finished the shower. Not surprisingly, some are complaining about losing the hour shower. But many students say the move helps them develop a water-saving sense.
Without the time limits, most students tended to shower for 30 to an hour in the bathhouse.
Some even used the hot water to wash their clothes. “In my experience, 10-20 minutes is enough,” said Dai Zhihua, a third-year student who usually takes 8 minutes.
A similar system has been installed in other universities. Shanghai Normal University introduced it at its Fengxiang Campus in September. The bathing fee there is 0.2 yuan per minute. One male student responded by setting a record with a two-minute shower.
41. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT true?
A. Students pay for the amount of time they want in the shower.
B. The clock times all through while the student is bathing except when the bather paused for soap.
C. If money runs out, there will be no water.
D. Having finished bathing, the student has to pay for it.
42. The underline word “flaw”(Paragraph3)most probably means______.
A. perfection B. advantage C. pity D. fault
43. Since the new system has performed, ______ of water can be saved.
A. a quarter B. one third C. one half D. two thirds
44. It can be inferred from the passage that______.
A. the new operation can solve the water crisis.
B. the new operation can raise students’ environmental awareness.
C. a similar operation has been set in other universities.
D. the university has saved a lot of water by using the new system.
45. In which column can you find this passage?
A. People. B. Society. C. Campus Life. D. Lifestyle.

Anyone who doubts that children are born with a healthy amount of ambition need spend only a few minutes with a baby eagerly learning to walk. No matter how many times the little ones stumble in their first efforts, most keep on trying, determined to master their amazing new skill. It is only several years later, many psychologists and teachers agree, that a good number of kids seem to lose their natural drive to succeed. For the parents of such kids, whose own ambition is often tied to their children’s success, it can be a painful experience.
Figuring out why the fire went out is the first step. Assuming that a kid doesn’t suffer from a learning disability, or isn’t involved in some family crisis(危機) at home, many educators attribute a sudden lack of motivation to a fear of failure or classmate pressure. “Everything is within the kids’ control; their intelligence is changeable,” says Lisa Blackwell, a research scientist at Columbia University. “More than any teacher or workshop,” Blackwell says, “parents can play a key role in conveying this message to their children by praising their effort, and progress rather than emphasizing their ‘smartness’ or praising high performance alone. Most of all, parents should let their kids know that mistakes are a part of learning.”
Some experts say our education system, with its strong emphasis on testing and separation of students into different levels of ability, also bears blame for the disappearance of drive in some kids. “These programs shut down the motivation of all kids who aren’t considered gifted and talented. They destroy their confidence,” says Jeff Howard, a social psychologist. Howard and other educators say it’s important to expose kids to a world beyond homework and tests, through volunteer work, sports, hobbies and other extracurriculum activities.
“The problem of the issue is that many students experience education as irrelevant to their life goals and ambitions,” says Michael Nakkual, a Harvard education professor. The key to getting kids to aim higher at school is to free them of the idea that class work is irrelevant, to show them how doing well at school can actually help them fulfill their dreams beyond it. They need to understand that you have to learn to walk before you can run.
51.According to the passage, the parents of kids with no ambition .
A.don’t do a very good job teaching them to walk
B.are to blame if the kids do poorly in school
C.feel pain because ambitions are connected to their success
D.should take part in extracurriculum activities with kids
52.The underlined part “the fire went out” probably means .
A.the motivation was suddenly lost
B.the fear of failure was suddenly gone
C.the learning disability was suddenly lost
D.the fire was suddenly gone
53.All the following can contribute to a sudden lack of ambition EXCEPT .
A.learning disability B.classmate pressure
C.emphasis on testing D.extracurricular activities
54.What is the most important thing for parents in motivating their kids?
A.By punishing kids who don’t display ambition.
B.By emphasizing smartness and high performance.
C.By telling kids that mistakes are a part of learning.
D.By praising the effort and progress they have made.
55.We can infer from the passage that .
A.children who have lost their ambition will never succeed in life
B.school performance has much to do with students’ later success
C.both the parents and the school are to blame for the lost ambition
D.younger kids learning to walk are more ambitious than older ones

閱讀下面的短文,然后按照要求寫一篇150詞左右的英語短文。
China news, Guangzhou, January 3--- According to a random survey covering 3,000 elementary and high school students in Guangzhou, the two groups of students have very different career outlooks. Most pupils dream of starting their own business after graduation, while most high school students long for a steady job.
“It’s so cool to be your own boss, and you can decide when to start a day’s work,” said Jay (not his real name), a fifth grade pupil. The hottest topic between him and his classmates is usually about their future careers, and many of them have already had a thorough plan for the future. Jay says that he will start his business with his friends in a few years after graduating from college, when he will have already accumulated some money.
High school students’ choices tend to be more reasonable. The majority of them say they will take an ordinary full-time job. Though some of them also appreciate the freedom of freelancing(自由職業(yè)), most of them will think twice before starting their own businesses, as it is extremely difficult to start a career from scratch.

Dear Alex,
I’m sorry to hear that you are afraid of the H1N1 Flu. I think you shouldn’t be worried. Here is some advice for you.
We all know that it’s necessary to have a good eating habit and make a healthy life style all the time. Besides, taking exercise every day helps to make you strong. What’s more, open the window to get the fresh air as often as possible. According to doctors, you should not go to the public places where there are many people, like parks and cinemas. If unfortunately you get this flu, you must go to hospital at once, because the earlier you see the doctor, the earlier you’ll get well.
I hope you are healthy forever.
Best wishes. Yours,
Li Hua
According to a survey, most elementary school students in Guangzhou hope to start their own business in the future, while most high school students prefer to take an ordinary job.
It’s true that career is a hot topic among school students. I have dreamed of being an excellent doctor since my childhood. First, I’m often told that to be a doctor, I can have a very good income, with which I can live more comfortably. Besides, if I have enough money, I can also help the poor. More importantly, doctors are angels to the patients, who can help the sick get rid of pain or even give a second life to the dying. I can imagine how great I will feel when seeing a patient recover from the illness because of my help.
Now what I should do is to study hard to make sure I can enter a famous medical university, where I can get the required knowledge and skills to be a good doctor.
