良伴(Companion)
清單中提到大家可以帶上自己喜歡的書(shū)。因?yàn)檫M(jìn)入大學(xué)后照例先是要進(jìn)行軍訓(xùn)(military drill)，而這時(shí)學(xué)校還沒(méi)發(fā)放圖書(shū)證(library card)，新生不能去圖書(shū)館看書(shū)。可是軍訓(xùn)的日子晚上會(huì)很無(wú)聊，這時(shí)你就需要一本喜歡的書(shū)來(lái)陪伴你度過(guò)這段“艱難歲月”。
另外清單上還有這么一句：“特別關(guān)照(special note)!!一本英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)法書(shū)(English Grammar Book)是必不可少的!因?yàn)榇髮W(xué)英語(yǔ)幾乎不教語(yǔ)法，如果寫(xiě)作文的時(shí)候忘了語(yǔ)法會(huì)很頭痛，有本語(yǔ)法書(shū)翻翻是很好的。”看來(lái)書(shū)不僅是打發(fā)時(shí)間的良伴，還可以雪中送炭(provide timely help)。(英語(yǔ)專(zhuān)業(yè)的表示對(duì)此沒(méi)有需要，學(xué)校會(huì)發(fā)下磚塊似的語(yǔ)法書(shū)……)
道具(Implement)
在這份清單上有兩樣比較特別的東西，在其他清單上沒(méi)怎么見(jiàn)過(guò)。
其一是家鄉(xiāng)特產(chǎn)(special local products)。好東西就要和大家共同分享，而且這還是一種“同學(xué)之間增進(jìn)感情(improve friendship)”的工具。清單后面還提到了應(yīng)該帶上點(diǎn)小禮物，讓舍友師生感情更融洽。如此種種，都可以算是建立良好關(guān)系的敲門(mén)磚(stepping stones to positive relationships)吧。
其二是正裝(formal dress/formal wear)。為什么新生要配正裝?怎么著也是畢業(yè)找工作時(shí)才需要的東西吧!來(lái)看看清單上對(duì)此的解釋?zhuān)?ldquo;開(kāi)學(xué)后，如果你想?yún)⒓訉W(xué)生會(huì)競(jìng)選(student council election)的話(huà)”。原來(lái)如此，竟然連這都想到了……雖然個(gè)人并不認(rèn)為競(jìng)選學(xué)生會(huì)必須穿正裝，成功與否還是在于個(gè)人能力和臨場(chǎng)表現(xiàn)，最重要你得是個(gè)有口才的演講家(eloquent speaker)，不過(guò)這倒是提醒新生朋友在大學(xué)期間要積極參加各種社團(tuán)(student society)，這也是為以后找工作(job hunting)做準(zhǔn)備，可不要一心只讀圣賢書(shū)哦。
心態(tài)(Attitude)
要說(shuō)這份清單上最特別的一樣，莫過(guò)于最后一條：“一顆塌實(shí)、耐得住寂寞的心”(a steady heart able to endure loneliness)。做人也好，做事也好，都應(yīng)該腳踏實(shí)地不輕浮，不要急功近利(eager for quick success and instant benefit)，不要企圖靠耍小聰明過(guò)日子(live by wits)。另外，雖然之前說(shuō)了大學(xué)里應(yīng)該多多參加各種學(xué)校活動(dòng)，但也不是讓你整天都生龍活虎坐不住，該靜下心來(lái)學(xué)習(xí)的時(shí)候還是要一門(mén)心思專(zhuān)注于學(xué)習(xí)(absorbed in study)。不管怎么說(shuō)，學(xué)習(xí)還是首要任務(wù)，況且這可能是你最后的四年校園生涯，以后再想坐在課堂上聽(tīng)課或是坐在圖書(shū)館里看書(shū)都是一件很困難的事了。
