When you walk into a college canteen or a restaurant on the street in China, you can often see tofu on the menu. Yes, tofu! Tofu is a big part of our daily food.
Tofu is said to appear in the Western Han Dynasty. At the time, Liu An, the grandson of Emperor Liu Bang, was eager to learn the secret of longevity, so he went deep into the mountain to find medicine for being long-lived. He failed in his efforts to produce immortal pills; instead, he created a kind of white material with attractive smell. The brave local farmers tried to taste the product, only to find that it was delicious. And it was named “bean curd” or “tofu”. Liu An became an unexpected inventor of tofu, and his hometown, Shouxian county of Anhui province, has been called the “hometown of tofu”.
Simple in production and cheap in cost, tofu soon became people’s favorite delicacy. After the Song Dynasty, the culture of tofu expanded even further. Many scholars and famous people also took part in spreading the culture. The great writer of the Northern Song Dynasty, Su Dongpo, took a special fancy to tofu and invented a tofu dish called Dongpo tofu.
It is said that in the 8th year of Kangxi Emperor’s rule of the Qing Dynasty, Wang Zhihe, born in Xianyuan county, Anhui province, went to Beijing to attend the imperial examination. Unfortunately, he failed the exam, so he had to make a living in Beijing by making tofu. One day, his tofu did not sell well and there was much left. Afraid that the tofu would go bad, he cut the tofu into small pieces and placed them into a jar with salt. Then, he closed the mouth of the jar and keep tofu in this way. Some days later, he opened the jar and found to his surprise that the tofu inside the jar was quite tasty. So he managed to sell it, which soon won the praise of the customers and then became the famous Wang Zhihe fermented tofu.
During the past few centuries, tofu has been again and again put into Chinese culture.
A woman who is beautiful but poor is known as “tofu xishi” (bean curd beauty). Xi Shi is known as one of the Four Great Beauties of China. It has been said while Xi Shi was washing her veil, her beauty caused fish to freeze and sink to the bottom of the river. Later, her name, Xi Shi, became synonymous with beauty. In Lu Xun’s novel Hometown, a beautiful tofu shop owner, Aunt Yang, is nicknamed “tofu xishi.” From then on, people often used “tofu xishi” to call those who have a good face but are born to a poor family — not necessarily relating to tofu.
Today, tofu has become a common dish on the reunion dinner table during the Chinese lunar New Year, because it sounds like the word for fortune and happiness in Chinese. The food has been thought to be able to bring good luck to the whole family.

Having been expected for several years, the Hong Kong Disneyland Park successfully opened to the public on September 12th, 2005. It is the 11th Disneyland in the world and the first in China.
Although Hong Kong Disneyland is currently the smallest of the 11 Disneyland Parks, it’s still able to have six theme parks similar to those in the other Disneyland parks. The six parks are Main Street U.S.A. Fantasyland, Adventureland, Tomorrowland, Toy Story Land and Grizzly Gulch. And the ticket price for each tourist is the lowest in the world at 399 HKD, or just about over 300 RMB yuan.
Main Street U.S.A.
Inspired by the Main Street U.S.A. in the first Disneyland, the buildings of this Main Street are almost the same as those in America. Like other Disney theme parks, Hong Kong Disneyland’s Main Street U.S.A. serves as the entrance of the park. The decor is small-town America from the years 1890–1910.
Unlike Main Streets from other parks, the Main Street at Hong Kong Disneyland is built mainly of wood instead of stone.
Fantasyland
Fantasyland features Sleeping Beauty Castle, as well as the Fantasy Gardens where costumed Disney characters can be met, and you’re always welcomed to take photos with them.
Adventureland
Hong Kong Disneyland’s Adventureland is the biggest among all Disney parks. It features a large island area, which is surrounded by the Jungle Cruise — much like the Rivers of America in most Disneyland parks.
Tomorrowland
Tomorrowland at Hong Kong Disneyland features the future style with blue and purple colors. Since the opening of the park, unique attractions have been added into the Hong Kong’s Tomorrowland.
Toy Story Land
Opened on 17th November 2011, Toy Story Land has been the first new themed land since the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland in 2005. It is located to the west side of the park, behind Fantasyland. The themed land features characters from the Toy Story movies, such as an enlarged Woody and an oversized paper plane.
Grizzly Gulch
Grizzly Gulch, opened on 14 July 2012, is a completely new story for Hong Kong Disneyland. The themed land features an abandoned mining town called “Grizzly Gulch”, set among mountains and woods. The town was set to be founded on 8 August 1888 — the luckiest day of the luckiest month of the luckiest year — wishing to discover gold.
In addition, the park also has two wonderful hotels and a wide range of shopping and dining places. You will find Mickey Mouse and his famous Disney friends are waiting for you in the happiest place on Earth.
One more thing, before you leave the park, don’t forget to watch the “Disney in the Stars” fireworks. It starts at 9:00 p.m. daily above Sleeping Beauty Castle in Fantasyland. Please be sure to get to the place earlier enough to occupy a good spot!
