My job as a police pfficer is to impose accountability on people who refuse, or have never learned, to impose it on themselves. But as every policeman knows, external control on peoples behavior is far less effective than internal restraints such as guilt, shame and embarrassment. Fortunately there are still communities smaller towns, usually where schools maintain discipline and where parents hold up standards that proclaim:

　　In this family certain things are not tolerated they simply are not done! Yet more and more, especially in our large cities and suburbs, these inner restraints are loosening. Your typical robber has none. He considers your property his property; he takes what he wants, including your life if you enrage him. The main cause of this break-down is a radical shift in attitudes. Thirty years ago, if a crime was committed, society was considered the victim. Now, in a shocking reversal, its the criminal who is considered victimized: by his underprivileged upbringing, by the school that didnt teach him to read, by the church that failed to reach him with moral guidance, by the parents who didnt provide a stable home.

　　責任感，是衡量社會道德水準的標志。有責任感的人多了，社會就進步；有責任感的人少了，社會就倒退。在今天，人們常說我們的社會道德滑坡，因此捍衛(wèi)文明，重新支起道德的支柱，是時代賦予我們的歷史責任。明末思想家顧炎武說過，天下興亡，匹夫有責。作為個人，無論是居廟堂之高，還是處江湖之遠，都應該為國家做貢獻，都對國家的興亡負有責任。春秋時期魯國平民曹劌，在齊軍襲擾魯國的時候，主動獻策，為國分憂。這種意識是一筆寶貴的精神財富。

　　武漢市鄱陽街有一座建于1917年的6層樓房，該樓的設計者是英國的一家建筑設計事務所。20世紀末，也即那座叫“景明大樓”的樓宇在漫漫歲月中度過了80個春秋后的一天，它的設計者遠隔萬里，給這一大樓的業(yè)主寄來一份函件。函件告知：景明大樓為本事務所在1917年設計，設計使用年限為80年，現(xiàn)已超期服役，敬請業(yè)主注意。80年前蓋的樓房，不要說設計者，連當年施工的工人，在世的也都應到了期頤之年了吧？然而，至今竟然還有人為它的安危操心！操這份心的，竟然是它的最初設計者，一個在異國的建筑設計事務所。這個更新?lián)Q代了數(shù)茬人的機構，經過近一個世紀的變遷，仍守著一個責任、一份承諾。面對中國某些渣工程，那種對人生命和國家財產的漠視與不負責任，我們需要的不只是反思。

　　愿我們所有的人都把責任感攜帶在人生的道路上，讓人生散發(fā)出金子般的光輝。那么什么叫“責任感”呢？我們生活在一定的社會關系中，并在其中擔當一定的角色，因而也必須承擔一定的義務，責任感就是那種我們對自己的角色和所承擔的義務的感知。通常所說的責任感一般是指“社會責任感”，這又可分為家庭責任感與集體責任感。

　　復旦大學教授張慶熊在談到家庭責任感時曾引用這樣一則報道。生病的母親問她含辛茹苦養(yǎng)育了18年的女兒：“如果我這病一時半會兒好不了怎么辦？”母親原以為女兒會說句孝順話的，誰知女孩卻說，那就安樂死吧。如此冷酷的口氣，仿佛這生病的母親同她毫不相干似的。然而，類似的例子在我們身邊并不鮮見。比如有些子女一邊用父母的錢擺闊氣，一邊卻嫌父母寒傖丟了他們的臉。這些人哪知生活的不易和每個家庭的具體情況，似乎他們是這個家庭的局外人，因此只知索取，卻不知理解，更談不上回報。如此下去，輕則貽誤自己，拖累家庭，重則禍害社會。究其因，就是缺乏家庭責任感。
