Dec 25 is the day that most Christianities celebrate the birth of Jesus.
There was no Christmas at first. It is said that the first Christmas was in 138, the first in record was in 336. But the bible doesn’t indicate on what day was Jesus born, so different Christmas days were celebrated in different places. Until 440, Roman church court fixed Dec 25 as the Christmas day.
In 1607, religious leaders all over the world met in Bethlehem and reached an agreement that Dec 25 would be the Christmas day. Since then, most Christians began to celebrate Dec 25, no matter where they are.
From the 19th century, with the popularizing of Christmas and Santa Claus, most people, no matter they believe in Christian or not began to celebrate Christmas.In the bible, Jesus was born at night, so the night of Dec 24 is known as the Christmas night.

圣誕節的由來
圣誕節不少孩子以為是圣誕老公公誕生的日子。其實圣誕節是來自基督教習俗，是慶祝榮耀尊貴的上帝為了愛世人，便將他的獨生子耶穌基督道成肉身來到世間，成為人的樣式，與人一同承擔苦難、救贖世人。圣誕節就是慶祝圣子耶穌基督的誕生。而在西方慶祝圣誕節不是只有圣誕節夜以及圣誕節當天，早在圣誕節前的四個星期日，便已經開始每周日慶祝耶穌誕生的習俗，這一段時間稱為“將臨期”。
在將臨節期，教會的布置全都以藍紫色為主。圣壇的桌巾、講臺的臺帷、牧師袍的肩帶都是紫色。并且圣壇中央通常會放置一個用長青樹的葉子作的花環，中間有五枝紫色的長燭，每個星期日，便多點上一枝蠟燭。到最后的圣誕夜里的“普世同慶”點上中間的最后一枝蠟燭。燭光象征著在許多年前的圣嬰孩耶穌其第一聲啼哭里，為這世上帶來了光明。
而圣誕老人其實是西元第三世紀的尼可萊斯主教。他曾冒死解救被處殛刑的政治犯、也揭發過貪婪官吏屯糧，使百姓渡過饑荒。在宗教被迫害時，被捕入獄，身上滿是鞭痕、鉗傷與烙印，仍堅持其信仰。而后半生留在米拉，設立孤兒院、照顧病患、貧民。尼可萊斯生平事跡中，最膾炙人口的'是他慷慨助人的行徑和對孩童的愛心，這些事跡后來被兒童文學家，予以豐富的想像而成為我們現在所知圣誕老人故事。
圣誕節最重要的意義是講“饒恕”與“和好”，而非等待圣誕禮物。在這寧靜的夜晚，想一想有沒有人得罪你，你還沒原諒他、饒恕他呢？
各國圣誕節習俗
法國法國中部的色日爾斯地方，每年圣誕節前后幾天必降大雪，白雪皚皚，令人清新。在西方人眼里，白色圣誕是一種吉祥。在法國，馬槽是最富有特色的圣誕標志，因為相傳耶穌是誕生在馬槽旁的。人們大唱頌贊耶穌的圣誕歌之后，必須開懷暢飲，香檳和白蘭地是法國傳統的圣誕美酒。
芬蘭芬蘭在12月圣誕節前后，漫山遍野都是怒放的紫羅蘭，掩映在白色的大地上，望去一片紫紅色，紫色圣誕使人心曠神怡。
英國和德國英國人和德國人一樣，圣誕節喝啤酒，吃烤鵝，他們更喜歡利用圣誕節假日外出旅游。
美國美國人過圣誕節著重家庭布置，安置圣誕樹，在襪子中塞滿禮物，吃以火雞為主的圣誕大菜，舉行家庭舞會。
