People change the codes so that the program will operate in a way that will meet their needs.

Sometimes changing the code will make the program run faster.

Or it will take problems out of the program.

These problems can cause a computer program to shut down.

People who change the source code of a computer program share these programs with eachother on the Internet.

One development was the mechanical elevator.

It meant that people would not have to climb manysteps to reach the upper floors of tall buildings.

The development of steel building technology also helped make taller buildings possible.

This tower was about 55 meters tall.

Today this would not be considered much of a skyscraper.

But at the time, this height was striking.

The structure was built using a steel frame.

This frame was load-bearing,meaning that the steel skeleton would support the buildingsweight, not its walls.

Before this technology, a taller building required creating thicker stone walls to support itsweight.

Thick walls are extremely heavy, and allow less room for windows and light.

M: Hey, Li Hua, whats up?

  L:什么?

M: Whats up? What are you doing?

  L:Whats up?

M: Whats up is really a common greeting.

M: No. Its like saying, "What is happening in your life?"

M: Well, its really only spoken language.

  M: Yes, definitely!

M: You can explain whats going on in your life, or you could say something as simple as: Not much.

Oh,not much, just getting ready for our test.

M: Thats good usage. You can really say anything.

M: You stress too much, this test will be a no brainer.

M: Smarter than me, thats for sure. What I mean is that this test will be really easy. No brainer means something that reqires little or no thought.

  M: Yeah.

  M: Thats right.

M: Yeah, that was a really easy decision, could be called no brainer. Of course I would go out with her.

M: Thats true. When the University gave you a scholarship to come study here in New York, it was a no brainer for you too.

M: So then why are you bothering to study?

M: On, ok, lets get back to work.

  (Starting buzzer)

M: Sometimes these games get really rough!

M: Wow, look at them! Its only five minutes into the game and they are already pushing and shoving.

M: Yeah, they really need to keep cool out there.

M: Li Hua, thats not what I meant. Keep cool means to calm down。Keep, means to hold and cool, meaning cold.

M: Yeah. Another example, remember last week when you got into an argument with the professor over your mid-term grade?

M: Right now Li Hua, you need to keep cool.

M: I cant believe how poorly they are playing.

M: Yeah, they have really managed to screw up this game.

M: "Screw up" means not to play well. The home team is certainly messing up.

M: "Screw up," it means to mess up.

M: No, it can be used to describe a lot of things. For example, I screw up on tests all the time.

M: He screwed up at work.

M: Yes, thats why I dont date anymore. Because I screw up all the time.

M: I do screw up a lot; I make mistakes all the time.

M: Look, they are playing like that! What is wrong with these players.

M: I hate this! They cant manage not to screw up tonight.

  L:Michael, 盡管他們screw up,我們還是要keep cool!

M: The train is just about to leave. Good thing you got here in time.

M: Only about four hours. Im probably going to sleep the entire way.

L:(train leaving station, announcer in background)

M: Li Hua, you are full of energy. But Im drained, Im going to sleep.

Drained?

M: Yeah. Drained, it means exhausted.

M: The word can be used two ways. To be physically drained and emotionally drained. For example, if a couple fight all the time, they would be emotionally tired, which you can also call drained.

M: Yeah, you understand. You dont even seem drained after the mid-terms.

M: Yeah, you were emotionally drained. Well, if you dont want me to sleep on the train, wed better go get more coffee. Lets go to the Cafe Car.

M: This coffee is going to keep me awake the entire trip.

M: Geez, Li Hua, I dont think I will be nearly as wired as you are.

  L:Wired?

M: You are right. This word has a couple of meanings. One means to be energetic and the other means to have nervous energy.

M: Yeah, thats right. But it has one other meaning as well. Wired means to be connected to something, such as being wired into the Internet, or being wired into a discussion.

M: You have been participating in the meetings to make decisions about our college, right?

M: Ok, your participation in the colleges meetings and being involved in those decisions means you are wired into the discussion.

Im wired into the discussion.

M: Yep. After all this coffee I have had, I dont feel so drained. In fact, after the next cup, I think Im going to be pretty wired.

M: Thanks so much, Li Hua!

Helped by one of his students, professor Kent Harries is testing a bamboo pole for its radio load, how much of a pressure or wave it can withstand.

Building codes everywhere require strict standardization of tests for all materials, such as timber or concrete. But tests for bamboo have not been standardized even though the strength of at least three species is comparable to steel.

“They are remarkably strong which are marked, the resilient, it’s optimized to be a very tall, obviously bamboo material, something like this, might grow 20 meters.and it supports its own weight, and of course it also supports huge wind loads in what knocks over that.”

Bamboo is widely used as food for pandas, for forniture or engineer products, such as plywood, glue laminated and cross laminated timber. But not much outside its native growing area, mostly because of its round cross section. But there are other reasons too.

“With this viewed in much of the world as well bamboo is for poor people, and so there is that mentality that we are trying to get over.”

Bamboo is suitable for construction (that) requires significantly less resources than comparable timber. It’s highly sustainable, with a harvest cycle of about three years, while soft wood requires about ten, and hard wood more than 30 years.

“If we standardize it, if we provide essentially documentation as test methods which the engineers can hang their hat on,we bring the material into the mainstream.”

Harries says the standardized bamboo poles could be used in multiple stock columns vertically and for floors and roofs horizontally. In many countries, they are already used for wall panel structures.

Have you ever wondered how one becomes a NASA astronaut? It begins with filling out an application.

The US space agency received more than 18,000 applications when it announced late last year that it was looking for a new class of astronauts.

Selection Manager Anne Roemer said the process is no easy task.

“It’s very hard. We will do it very carefully. It starts by us reviewing all of the files to make sure that they meet the basic qualifications, and then we actually utilize our current team of astronauts to come in and review the files as well,"

Applicants must be a U.S. citizen and have a bachelor’s degree in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics. They also need at least three years of related experience or at least 1,000 hours as a jet airplane pilot.

Along with being able to pass a physical, NASA likes applicants to have certain personality traits.

“I think leadership, teamwork, the ability to both work on a team, lead a team, but also be a follower on a team.Communication certainly plays a role,so it’s some pretty common skills that I think translate into even other professions beyond being an astronaut..”

About 120 applicants will be invited to the Johnson Space Center in Houston for a first round of interviews.About half of them will be invited back for a second round.

Once astronaut candidates are selected, they must successfully complete a two-year training period.

"Well, they will learn a little bit of everything about spaceflight, whether that’s systems training, right now they do Russian language for a language training , they will do EVA, Extravehicular Activity (spacewalks) training. So they do a little bit of everything in that two-year window before moving into their mission specific training,”

This group of astronauts may fly on three new spacecraft that are currently being developed, including NASA’s Orion, which is aimed at deep space exploration. If all goes well, NASA plans to send humans to Mars in the 2030s.

For people who are interested in pursuing a career in space, Roemer says,“The piece of advice we always like to tell young folks that are interested is to pick a career that you are passionate and enthusiastic about, because you tend to do well with things you like, and then being an astronaut would be the icing on the cake to hopefully what would otherwise be a very fulfilling career,”

Since the first group of seven astronauts were selected from the military in 1959, only 338 others have been chosen as NASA astronauts.
