Were是虛擬語氣，我們通常用一般過去時態(tài)表示和現(xiàn)在的事實相反的一種假設(shè)。(但是BE動詞的過去時在這種虛擬中總是用WERE。)
E.g. If I had the amount of money, I would take a tour around the world.
If I were the king, I would save all the people out of hunger.
I wish I were a bird.
If only I were together with my friends now, but I am too busy to take part in the party.
虛擬語氣
虛擬語氣用來表示不可能發(fā)生或者可能性不大的事情，有時用來表示一種理想或者愿望。
1.由wish 引導的表示愿望的虛擬語氣，具體用法如下：
(1)wish 表示對現(xiàn)在的愿望時，他所引導的賓語從句中謂語動詞形式為：過去式：(be動詞用were) 如：
E.g. I wish I finished my homework already. 我希望我已經(jīng)完成功課了。
I wish I were the president of the united states.
(2)wish 表示將來的愿望時，他所引導的賓語從句中謂語動詞形式為：would，could，might，+ 動詞原形。如：
E.g. I wish I could be a bird.
(3)wish 用于表示對過去已經(jīng)發(fā)生事實的一種已不可能實現(xiàn)的愿望時，賓語從句的謂語動詞形式為：had +動詞過去分詞 或 could/would +have+動詞過去分詞。如：
E.g. I wish I had passed the examination.
I wish I have done it.
2.had hoped 后的賓語從句中的謂語動詞形式為：would+動詞原形，表示過去未實現(xiàn)的愿望或令人失望的事情。如：
E.g. I had hoped he would forgive me.
I had hoped we could overcome that difficulty in the end.
3.would (had)rather，would as soon，would sooner 和would prefer所引導的從句中要用過去式，表示現(xiàn)在或?qū)淼那闆r，用過去完成時表示過去的情況，表達希望或婉轉(zhuǎn)的責備。
E.g. would prefer she didn’t spend too much money on her holiday.
I would rather you come to my apartment at once.
4.在表示絕對不可能的情況時，通常會遇到這樣一個句型：If I were you…
E.g. If I were you, I will choose to be a teacher in the future.
5.It’s high time that… 是該到的時候了。該句型中的從句要使用虛擬語氣，也就是動詞要用過去式。
E.g. Its getting dark. It’s high time we left.
You have classes early tomorrow morning. So it is time that you went to bed.
