1960年世界氣象組織執行委員會決定把每年3月23日定為世界性紀念日，要求各成員國每年在這一天舉行慶祝活動，并廣泛宣傳氣象工作的重要作用。
每年世界氣象日都有一個中心活動內容，各成員國在這一天可根據當年的中心內容，開展多種形式的宣傳和紀念活動，如組織群眾到氣象臺站參觀訪問，舉行有政府領導人參加的群眾慶祝儀式，舉辦氣象儀表裝備、照片、圖表和資料的展覽，舉行記者招待會，由報刊、廣播電臺、電視臺報道特寫文章和講話，放映氣象科學電影，發行紀念郵票等
