學(xué)習(xí)用英語寫作是培養(yǎng)英語思維能力的重要途徑之一，有了一定的英語思維能力，英語學(xué)習(xí)就能產(chǎn)生一個(gè)相應(yīng)的飛躍。因此，在高中階段指導(dǎo)、培養(yǎng)學(xué)生寫英語作文是不容等閑視之的。
用英語解釋生詞，為學(xué)生打好寫作基礎(chǔ)。教師應(yīng)創(chuàng)造語言環(huán)境，通過耳濡目染、潛移默化，培養(yǎng)用英語思維的習(xí)慣。在教每課的單詞和詞組時(shí)，要盡量用學(xué)生學(xué)過的單詞、詞組進(jìn)行解釋。剛開始時(shí)，可由教師用英語解釋生詞，后來可讓學(xué)生根據(jù)漢語釋意，用自己學(xué)過的單詞、詞組解釋。這樣，經(jīng)過一段時(shí)間的訓(xùn)練，學(xué)生的英語思維能力就會有所提高，為英語寫作打下較好的基礎(chǔ)。在作文時(shí)，如果不知道某個(gè)東西的英語表達(dá)方式而又無詞典可查，這時(shí)學(xué)生就會用其釋義來代替，如用"a person who makes clothes"來代替"a tailor"， 這雖不完全符合英語語言習(xí)慣，但對初學(xué)寫作的高中生來說還是值得鼓勵的'。
通過縮寫和改寫課文，培養(yǎng)學(xué)生的概括能力、想象能力。縮寫課文會激勵學(xué)生去認(rèn)真鉆研課文內(nèi)容，有助于加深學(xué)生對課文的理解，提高學(xué)生歸納總結(jié)和進(jìn)行簡要表達(dá)的能力。縮寫課文允許改動原意，不允許刪去主要內(nèi)容。縮寫課文一般應(yīng)該用自己的話來寫，不能只停留在拼湊原文的詞句上，也不要逐句、逐段照原文去改寫。這些均通過示例讓學(xué)生明白和掌握，并在實(shí)踐中讓他們仔細(xì)加以體會。改寫課文可以培養(yǎng)學(xué)生舉一反三的語言表達(dá)能力，熟練掌握英語表達(dá)方法，促使學(xué)生去鉆研、去思考，調(diào)動學(xué)習(xí)的積極性，學(xué)生把學(xué)過的知識運(yùn)用到實(shí)際中去，這對于提高英語水平大有裨益。改寫，除了我們通常所說的句子、段落的釋義之外，還包括用其他體裁改寫整篇課文。
如在學(xué)習(xí)了"The Lost Necklace"（《項(xiàng)鏈》）、"Tailor's Shop"（《百萬英鎊》）等課文后，我引導(dǎo)學(xué)生把這些課文進(jìn)行改寫，以英語劇的形式表演出來，這就要求學(xué)生不僅要讀這兩個(gè)故事的原文或改寫本，更要求他們把已學(xué)過的知識運(yùn)用到實(shí)際中，圍繞劇情，根據(jù)角色的身份、職業(yè)特點(diǎn)、社會文化背景等進(jìn)行增加或刪改，提高了他們運(yùn)用語言的能力。
此外，鍛煉學(xué)生運(yùn)用其它體裁改寫整篇文章。如高二"A Famous Detective"寫著名偵探福爾摩斯的故事是以第三人稱敘述的，故事中的人物有大偵探福爾摩斯、助手華生、小姐、叔叔等。我讓學(xué)生發(fā)揮各自的優(yōu)勢，用各種體裁和形式，對原文進(jìn)行改寫。有的改寫成了劇本，我就組織幾個(gè)學(xué)生分角色表演；有的學(xué)生用第一人稱來敘事，以故事中的某一個(gè)角色為"我"，來重新構(gòu)造故事；還有的發(fā)揮充分的想象，將"毒蛇"擬人化，來敘述故事等等。學(xué)生們興意昂然，自由發(fā)揮，身臨其境，創(chuàng)造情景，全班有多一半的同學(xué)參加了有表情的表演、朗誦等課堂展示活動，不僅鍛煉了他們的想象能力，也鍛煉了學(xué)生們的寫作能力。
以多題材、多形式的自由作文訓(xùn)練，加強(qiáng)了意念功能的培養(yǎng)。經(jīng)過一段時(shí)間的縮寫和改寫的筆頭訓(xùn)練之后，學(xué)生對寫作有了一定的基礎(chǔ)和興趣，就可以放手讓他們進(jìn)行多種題材的自由作文訓(xùn)練，使學(xué)生在自由表達(dá)思想和內(nèi)心感受中，加強(qiáng)意念功能培養(yǎng)。 練習(xí)寫周記日記是培養(yǎng)學(xué)生英語自由寫作能力的第一步。寫周記日記 ，學(xué)生不受內(nèi)容和經(jīng)驗(yàn)的限制，可就熟悉的題材，充分發(fā)揮自己的想象力，自由表達(dá)。 看圖作文新穎活潑 ，能激發(fā)學(xué)生英語寫作的積極性。可以用流傳較廣的傳說、故事作圖，讓學(xué)生寫記敘文。比如畫幾幅老鼠商議給貓掛鈴鐺的圖，讓學(xué)生以"The cat and the bell"作文。也可畫一幅漫畫，讓學(xué)生寫簡易議論文。如畫一幅三人向三個(gè)方向劃一條小船，讓學(xué)生寫出情景加以評論，并命題。 作文可由教師統(tǒng)一命題，也可由學(xué)生自由命題。命題作文要注意先易后難，開始讓學(xué)生寫一些自己熟悉、易于表達(dá)的題材。如："Our School"、 "My Family"、"A Letter To Somebody"、"A Repectable Teacher"、"Life In Summer Vacation"等。在此基礎(chǔ)上，提高一步，寫一些較難的題目，如:My Ideal, Money And Happiness 等。剛開始練習(xí)命題作文寫作時(shí)，可讓學(xué)生課外完成，規(guī)定交作文日期即可。經(jīng)過一段時(shí)間后，可要求他們在課堂上完成，借以培養(yǎng)他們的思考能力，提高快速寫作的能力。
