Large Companies and Small Companies
Upon graduation from college, young men and women face the first choice in their career life: to go to a large company or a small one? Although many graduates are attracted by the prestige of large companies, I believe the small one will afford more chances of success and more opportunities to develop your ability.
There are two basic differences between the large and small enterprises. First, working in the small company you operate primarily through personal contacts; you have more chance to develop your communication ability and the ability to handle various kinds of personalities. In contrast, in the large company there are established policies and fairly rigid procedures. Even the man at the top is only a cog in a big machine: you needn‘t make any decision and can’t see the effect of your work…… Second, in a small business you are normally exposed to all kinds of experiences and expected to do a great many things without too much help or guidance. Thus, you may acquire much more skills and experience, and develop the ability to handle different, complicated things. But in the large corporation, since you are normally taught one thing and limited to one procedure, you may become the man who knows more and more about less and less.
Obviously if you want to gain more experience and ability needed in business organizations and to become an excellent manager or executive in your future career, working in a small company is your best choice.
Qualities That Employer Seek
Knowing what an employer is looking for in a potential employee can help an applicant to prepare for an interview.An interviewer for a major corporation was asked these questions: What specific skills are you looking for in applicants?And how do you identify these skills? He responded:
On the one hand,most important for us in the way of skills is the ability to communicate.Can people speak clearly? Can they articulate the kind of person they believe themselves to be? In what kind of work situations do they perform well? What are their strengths and weaknesses? We want to know about the personal qualities of the inpidual, so I try to ask questions to draw them but and attempt to find out if they have a sense of themselves. If they do have good communication skills, they will be able to do this logically and concisely.
On the other hand,I am looking for creativity.Can they be instinctive? I will ask some "off-the-wall" questions just to see if this throws them. How do they respond in these tough situations?Can they be creative with their answers? This is very important when they are out in business situations with customers. They will have to respond to very sudden changes and problem-solving situations that they are not necessarily familiar with, and I want to know if they can handle them.
Is Stress a Bad Thing?
I can t stand the pressure and competition, explained one friend of mine when asked why he decided to quit his highly-paid but demanding position in his company recently. My friend may have his own reasons, but I don t think his decision is wise in reality.
It s true that my friend s case is not unique. In the last few years quite a number of men and women have chosen to do something less competitive at the cost of a comfortable, easy life a highly-paid job can obtain. They are afraid that the stresses and strains of work will rob them of joy and happiness and do them harm both physically and mentally. In fact, however, stress isn t the bad thing it is often supposed to be. Unless it gets out of control, a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and challenge, and to give purpose and significance to an otherwise meaningless, idle life. People under stress tend to express their full range of potential and to actualize their own personal worth the very aim of a human life.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. What we can do is to develop our adaptive abilities to deal with it rather than to escape from it.
College Students’ Job Hunting
College Students’ Job Hunting
In recent years, college students find it increasingly difficult to get a job. It sounds strange since young college students are usually intelligent, well-educated and eager to bring their talent into full play. Then what underlies the strange phenomenon?
There are several reasons for this. To begin with, nowadays college students aim too high. All they want are “good” jobs which could offer good salary, comfortable working conditions, high social status among others. Consequently, most college students are unwilling to accept vacant jobs they consider not “good” enough. Another reason is that there is a big gap between the majors some students study in school and the demands of vacant jobs. So companies think some students are not fit for the jobs.
Solution to the problem requires efforts on both the society and the students. The companies should value the students, talent and knowledge while the latter should not merely aim at material gains. They should be down-to–earth in building up their career. Furthermore, they should face their weak points so as to improve themselves and be more competent.
Graduate employment problem
Increasing numbers of college graduates are finding themselves in a situation where too many jobseekers are fighting for survival. Our class has had a heated discussion on this problem. Some students hold different ideas.___________________________________________________
1、不會翻譯“自己創業”;
2、把“繼續深造”翻譯成:go further studies;
3、自己的觀點和看法寫得空洞無物;
4、沒有對70%,20%等百分數進行適當處理;
The majority of the students, making up 70%, are more realistic and don’t expect a high salary. They think it sensible to land a job as soon as possible. In this way, they hope to reduce the burden on their families. They also believe there are better opportunities for development offered in the west or in rural areas.
In order to be better prepared for the future job-hunting, one fifth of them choose to stay in universites for further education, or go to vacational schools to learn practical skills. The rest 10% are brave enough to start a company of their own, thus creating jobs for other graduates as well as themselves. The choice isboth challenging and rewarding.
As for me, I will take my interests and abilities into account while choosing a job. It may not be a decent job with a handsome income, but will surely be most suited to me. I hope my first job will offer an opportunity to learn new skills and gain rich experience.
70% of them think it makes sense that they realize an early employment by lowering their income expectations, thus reducing the burden on their families. They also believe there’re better opportunities for development if they go to work in the west or rural areas. 20% of them consider full employment an unrealistic goal, so they choose to continue their further study or go to vocational schools to learn some practical skills to make better preparations for future careers. Finally, the rest 10% determine to set up their own businesses.
As for me, I think after a series of timely measures taken by the government, we are confident about and capable of overcoming the current difficulties and challenges and the employment prospects for graduates will be better soon. So all we need to do now is plan and act in ways that reflect the reality, to assure that we make full use of our talent and skills.
